Thyroid Surgery

Thyroid surgery, also known as thyroidectomy, is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of the thyroid gland. This surgery is performed for various medical conditions affecting the thyroid, such as benign nodules, goiter, thyroid cancer, or hyperthyroidism.

Uses

Thyroid surgery is performed to treat various conditions, including:

  • Benign Thyroid Nodules: Non-cancerous growths on the thyroid gland that may cause symptoms such as a visible lump, pressure, or difficulty swallowing.
  • Goiter: Enlargement of the thyroid gland, which can cause pressure on the trachea or esophagus.
  • Thyroid Cancer: Surgery is often the primary treatment for thyroid cancer, either removing the whole gland (total thyroidectomy) or a portion (lobectomy).
  • Hyperthyroidism: Overactivity of the thyroid gland that may be treated with surgery if other treatments such as medication or radioactive iodine are not effective.
