Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, are swollen blood vessels located in the lower rectum or anus. Hemorrhoids are common and can cause discomfort, itching, bleeding, and pain.
There are two main types of hemorrhoids:
Internal Hemorrhoids: These occur inside the rectum and are usually painless unless they prolapse (protrude) outside the anus.
External Hemorrhoids:These occur under the skin around the anus and can be painful, especially if they become thrombosed (contain a blood clot).
Treatment Options for Piles
Non-Surgical Treatments:
Lifestyle Changes: Increasing fiber intake, staying hydrated, and avoiding straining during bowel movements can help alleviate symptoms.
Topical Treatments:Over-the-counter creams, ointments, or suppositories can provide relief from itching and pain.
Oral Medications: Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications may be used to manage symptoms.
Rubber Band Ligation: A procedure in which a small rubber band is placed around the base of an internal hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply, causing it to shrink and fall off.
Sclerotherapy: A solution is injected into the hemorrhoid to cause it to shrink.
Surgical Treatments:
Hemorrhoidectomy: The surgical removal of hemorrhoids. This is usually reserved for severe or recurring cases.
Stapled Hemorrhoidopexy:A procedure that repositions the hemorrhoids and cuts off their blood supply, causing them to shrink.
